So where and what is a Happy Place?

First the What:

Your Happy Place is a mental state achieved when you want to escape the unpleasant or uncomfortable.
Everyone's happy place is different and often very personal.

It has been described as a psychologically-induced trance-like state, where we regress to from a stressful situation.

Happy Places are often based on actual, physical locations. When I was young one of my Happy Places was Giant Springs.
I also had a wonderful Happy Place across from South Coast Plaza in Coasta Meza California in a Bank courtyard. That happy Place was only at night when it was quite and filled with wonderful magical shadows. I could sit there for hours and often did.

One of Lesley’s favorite times and places was when we performing in The Bahamas, it was the beach a beach in Freeport.

It is the memories of these special places that we retreat to in our minds, they are the foundations of our Happy Place.

Or, just maybe your Happy Place is not based on a real location. That little log Bridge to Terabetha, Through a certain Looking Glass, Over the Rainbow, at the back of a big Wardrobe or maybe some fantasy land that only you know about.

That's the point, it's YOUR HAPPY PLACE, so go there and be happy now.

If you need help getting to your happy place, email me and I will be happy to send you a simple way to get there. tc@tctahoe.com

It was typing class in Charles Marion Russell High School that I meet Jeffery Allan Overturf.

He has been known by many names, Jeff, Turf, Stinky the Clown, The Answer Man and many more.

Jeff is a wonderfully talented man. He is an artist, he is musician and a hellva funny guy.

We partnered in high school to form a comedy team called Idiots Inc.

Jeff has written some fabulous songs, following is one of my favorites.

I think we can all learn a little something from Uncle Jeffy’s song.

The Smile

I went for a walk
down to the park

Tryin' to fire up my engine
with a plug in my spark

I saw a little girl laughin'
at some funny bug she'd found

How'd she find the sunshine
so close to the ground?

Well, I watched this girl gigglin'
and then she saw me too

And she was so red and yellow and orange
and I was so blue

She was so full of "happy"
and she saw I had none

And she said,
"I got 'smiles' to spare."
and she let me have one.

Well, I went on back home
and I felt back in place

And of all of that fog that I'd left there,
there was nary a trace

My shutters were open
and there was sun through my blinds

And all of my feelin's that mattered,
were once again mine.

So you can look on the mountain
and you can search o'er the globe

And you can seek out the wisdom
that's behind a black robe

And you'll prob'ly find answers,
but none quite so true

As an "unasked for smile"
that's just given to you.

And it was worth a jillion dollars,
but no payment got asked

So when I'm out there pacin'
and I see a "blue mask"

I pass on that twinkle
that she'd shared with me

And I watch the mouths wrinkle,
'cause they know, it's for free

But regrets are like anvils
that you carry around

And you don't make 'em lighter
by wearin' a frown

So if you go out walkin' and see this girl, would you please Pay her special attention and thank her for me.

Yep, tell her she's got change comin',
for the "smile" she gave me.

A Few Good Reasons
Why You Should Smile

Smiling Makes Us Attractive

We are drawn to people who smile. We want to know why they are happy.

Smiling Changes Our Mood

Next time you are feeling down, try smiling.
There's a good chance you’ll feel better. Smiling can trick the body into helping you change your mood.

Smiling Is Contagious

See Jeffy's Song

Smiling Makes You Feel Better, Physically Better

Science has shown that smiling helps boost your immune system.

Smiling Lowers Your Blood Pressure

When you smile, there is a measurable reduction in your blood pressure. Give it a try if you have a blood pressure monitor at home. Sit for a few minutes, take a reading. Then smile for a minute and take another reading while still smiling. Do you notice a difference?

Smiling Releases Endorphins, Natural Pain Killers and Serotonin

Studies have shown that smiling releases endorphins, natural pain killers, and serotonin. Together these three make us feel good. Smiling is a natural drug.

Smiling Lifts the Face and Makes You Look Younger

The muscles we use to smile lift the face, making a person appear younger. Don't go for a face lift, just try smiling your way through the day -- you'll look younger and feel better.

Smiling Makes You Seem Successful

Smiling people appear more confident, are more likely to be promoted, and more likely to be approached. Put on a smile at meetings and appointments and people will react to you differently.

Smiling Helps You Stay Positive

Try this test: Smile. Now try to think of something negative without losing the smile. It's hard. When we smile our body is sending the rest of us a message that "Life is Good!" Stay away from depression, stress and worry by smiling.

Too many people believe their lives would be more satisfying if only...

The life you want is here, now, waiting for you to grab it. Too many of us waste our lives planning and hoping and dreaming about how wonderful our life would be...if only I can loss those extra pounds, if only I met the right person, if only I won the lottery.

Dale Carnegie said it best;

"One of the most tragic things I know about human nature is that all of us tend to put off living. We are all dreaming of some magical rose garden over the horizon--instead of enjoying the roses that are blooming outside our windows today."

We need to understand our happiness does not depend on other people, on fate, or on forces beyond our control.

It is imperative to see just how wonderful your life is right now.

If your focus is how great things will be in the future, you will be missing the opportunities being presented to you today.

By recognizing and creating happiness now, you are creating your future happiness.
That is sustainable happiness!

We are constantly told “don’t live in the past!”,
But time is a funny thing. A funny thing that nobody really understands.

What past are we not supposed to live in?

Am I to forget about the years I spent in the hospital or get over the fact that I just wasted two hours of my life watching that re-make of the Wolfman?!

You get the same problem with the future. Your plans for dinner are in the future, but so is Al Gore’s next ice age.

The problem comes from the fact that when we talk about living in the past we aren’t talking about time and space but rather a state of mind.

So many of us make the mistake of trying to live in the future.

We seem to live such busy lives that the present seems a blur.

While the future seems to stretch out before us, giving us all the time we need to find a new job meet our soul mate, or finally loss that weight.

And why shouldn’t we live in the future? It's so very easy to believe our hopes and dreams can be fulfilled tomorrow, just ask Annie. After all she promised us that the sun will come out tomorrow.

But when you pin most, if not all of your happiness on the future you guarantee you'll never be truly happy.

You need to focus on the present, on the experience of living.

I think the best way I can explain living in the now is, think about sitting in a movie theater, watching a really good movie. You're not thinking about work or what you want for dinner. You are focused on that movie, even if it is that re-make of the Wolfman.
You are focused on the movie. You're in the moment.

If you can learn to bring that focus to your everyday life, that is how and where you will begin to be happier.

Should you stop thinking and planning for tomorrow, NO! Not saying that at all, remember the Grasshopper and the Ants.

But there is a vast difference between planning for the future and living in it.

Remember while you are making plans to be happier in the future, your life is still going on around you. Things are still happening now, good things and bad things.

Life doesn't stand still just because you've made a choice to start living tomorrow.

Life should not be something to be endured until your happy future arrives. Your present should be happy exhilarating, and inspiring.

And it can be if you simply live in it and embrace it.
TC TAHOEhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13841627145244357086noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4363556867567959844.post-24128471406777041612012-06-04T05:50:00.003-07:002012-06-04T05:50:51.741-07:00Little Girl Lost

I have had many memorable moments performing magic over the years.

I have been fortunate to have been honored with awards from my peers. I have been hired by celebrities like Pirece Brosnan, Minnie Driver Steven Segal. I have worked on movies with Sean Penn and Albert Finney and Jack Nicholson.

Magic has
afforded me the opportunity to work with icons and idols like Carol
Channng and Steve Allen, but one of the most memorable moments in my
magic career was provided by a little girl named Sarah.
I was
working an afternoon party, doing walk-around magic, this is where the
magician goes table to table or group to group and does slight-of-hand
magic.

Everything went well during the first hour. Then I
noticed a little girl, six years old, sitting on her own. I started to
go over to her, but was stopped by a hand on my shoulder. It was the
little girl’s mother.

She explained to me that her daughter,
Sarah, was uncomfortable around men. It seems her dad had gotten drunk
one night, he slapped Sarah around pretty bad and then killed himself.

Apparently, Sarah had not spoken for almost a year. I said ok, I will leave her be, her mother walked away.

I
saw that Sarah had been watching me talk to her mother. I didn’t go
over to her, but from where I was, I took out a little ball and made it
vanish.

She never smiled, or even acknowledged what I had done,
not the first time that has happen to me by the way, so I walked away to
perform for a group of adults.
I was about to do the ball routine, when I felt something tug on my jacket.

I looked down and it was Sarah. I knelt down and asked if she wanted to see some magic.
She shook her head. I looked into her sad eyes. I took out a tiny wand that I carry with me.

I actually don’t know why I carry it, sometimes people expect you to have one, I guess.

Anyway, I asked Sarah if she would like to help me, she didn’t shake her head, so I took that as a yes. I said, “Ok, you hold on to the magic wand”.

I
stood back up to the adults and started the ball routine, and every
time the ball was to do something magically, I would nod at Sarah and
she would wave the wand for me.
She followed me around for the rest of the gig, one hand holding on to the wand the other to my jacket.

Her mother followed us too, she seemed awe struck.

I wish I could say that there was a magical Hollywood ending and Sarah spoke, but no.

When
it was time to leave, I knelt down to Sarah and told her she could keep
the magic wand. She never smiled or said a word; she just walked back

“…most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be. The operative word is “mind.” The first thing to know about how to be happy is that it is a state of mind. If we control our minds, we control our happiness.”
~Abraham Lincoln

Invasion of the Mind Controller!

Am I talking about talking about Aliens from outer space? Some Covert Government Super Men in Black agency? No. I’m talking about television, movies, advertising and magazines!

So much of the media comes at us from a negative place. I have a home in Central Florida and do you know what the local news channel calls their weather department? Severe Weather. Severe Weather!
It doesn’t matter if it’s sunny, stormy or cold, they call there service Severe Weather. Like so many newscaster these days you can see the gleam in their eyes when there is some terrible news to report.

And speaking of TV Weather, why? Why do they always say Partly Cloudy? When a much happier and more accurate way of saying that would be MOSTLY SUNNY!
I have almost completely given up watching the news, it just so sad and depressing.
Most media’s aim seems to be to tell us we are not good enough, smart enough or pretty enough and we should be scared!

What makes you happy? I can’t answer that and neither can the media. Only YOU know what truly makes you happy.

Do not let anyone tell you what happy is. Not the TV, not your favorite magazine and not me.

I am not here to tell you what should make you happy, but rather how to find what your Happy is and help you get there.

Standards are a personal thing. Those infamous Joneses that we are trying to keep up with, are themselves hypnotized by false notions of how to be happy.

Now, Look into my eyes, deep into my eyes...not around my eyes but in my eyes and...
I am here for a day while performing on Carnival Crusie Lines ship The Inspiration.
Besides the five differnt shows I am doing I have been asked to give a talk to some new crew members. These young people have come on board the Inspration to learn to work on the Entertainment staff.

As part of their duities they will have to MC shows and introduce guest entertainers such as myself. And that is what I am speaking to them about.

In meeting and talking to these enthusiastic "kids" it made me think. When we are young, there seem so many more opportunities in front of us. There seemed to be no end to all the new beginning; new realationships, new jobs, new homes.

Think back to the fear and excitement we felt when the world was ours for the taking.
If we wanted to start over in a some new completely opposite direction, we did!

Then the unthinkable happened, we got older.

Changing direction dosn't seem so easy any more. New beginnings don't seem to present themselves to us any more.

Well, I am here to tell you that ain't so.

Those new beginings are there, most of us just stop looking for them.

We get comfortable. We seattle into our lives. We no longer think shaking things up is a good idea.

But by thinking and acting in this way we can miss out on so much happiness.

No matter your actual age, stop thinking and acting old.
What oppertuunities would your young self see before you?

Take a class. Isn't there somthing you always wanted to do, but growing up got in the way?
Did you ever learn to paint? Didn't you want to learn to play an instrument or sky dive?

Open those young eyes of yours and see what the world has to offer. The opportunities are still there, see them, seize them

Stay tuned and i will tell you all about our new adventure.
TC TAHOEhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13841627145244357086noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4363556867567959844.post-31144316031098509872010-10-05T11:54:00.000-07:002010-10-05T11:56:08.756-07:00The Butterfly

Very often after our talks or ‘shows’ we get asked how is it possible to be happy in difficult situations. Well, it’s not always possible, sorry. But I do like to offer up this little parable.

A man found a cocoon of a butterfly. One day a small opening appeared. He sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could, and it could go no further.

So the man decided to help the butterfly. He took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bit of the cocoon. The butterfly then emerged easily. But it had a swollen body and small, shriveled wings.

The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that, at any moment, the wings would enlarge and expand to be able to support the body, which would contract in time.

Neither happened!

In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a swollen body and shriveled wings. It never was able to fly.

What the man, in his kindness and haste, did not understand was that the restricting cocoon and the struggle required for the butterfly to get through the tiny opening were God's way of forcing fluid from the body of the butterfly into its wings so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved its freedom from the cocoon.

We are all faced with difficult times and often we have to overcome these difficulties on our own. We have to trust in our inner strength.

This is why it is so very important to build up a good reserve of happiness and positivity.

Just like we must keep our immune system strong, so that we can fight off physical aliments, so to, must we have a strong happiness immune system…wait, I’m not sayin’ we want to be immune to happiness…no, that's the opposite of what…hold a …LESLEY!

Holds meetings in his RV
I can't afford his gas
So I'm stuck here watching TV
I don't have digital
I don't have diddly squat
It's not having what you want
It's wanting what you've got

And so begins the song "Soak Up The Sun" by the lovely SHERYL CROW

I always enjoyed the song when it came on the radio, I would sing along, much to the amusement of the other drivers.
Then one day, I listened to what Sheryl and I were singing.

It's not having what you want
It's wanting what you've got

As simple as that was, I was suddenly struck by its wisdom. I began to think about it in my own life.
Unfortunately the more I thought about it, the more I realized I spent too much time and energy into either wanting things I didn't have yet or thinking that I needed to get the new version of this or the updated, flashier upgraded one of those.

Think about it. How much of what you have in your life do you want? I mean truly want?
How much thought and energy do you waste wishing things were different?

So many of us, even those of us who should know better, waste a whole lot of time thinking that things will be so much better when..

...I lose weight!
....when I get that new job!
...move to a bigger place!
...am healthier!

Yes, the situations in our lives, good and bad, impact us, but the truth is that we always have a choice about how we react to our situations.

More money, a job, a better job, bigger house, or any of the myriad of things we think we want, won’t, no cannot make us happy.

“Wanting what we’ve got” doesn't mean everything is "perfect" in our lives, or that we can't want for things to change or grow in a positive way.

It simply means we choose to accept what we have in our life, right now. Not just accept but accept with gratitude.

I am not talking about being complacent, weak, or giving up. I’m talking about making peace with life as it is, now.

So take a look at your life and try to see the positive in it.
By focusing your attention on wanting what we’ve got, we will create a deeper sense of peace and joy in our lives.

Now, if you will have to excuse me, because...

I'm gonna soak up the sun
Gonna tell everyone
To lighten up (I'm gonna tell 'em that)
I've got no one to blame
For every time I feel lame
I'm looking up o I'm gonna soak up the sun
I'm gonna soak up the sun

I heard Dr Phil say, "Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, man can achieve".

Of course Napoleon Hill and Dale Carnegie had been shouting this idea for years.

Then imagine my surprise when Wikipedia attributed the same quote to Marcus Aurelius, in 4 BC!

My first real ‘understanding’ of this concept was in the Marlo Thomas produced TV Special "Free to Be… You and Me"

Between William wanting a doll, Rosie Grier telling me it was alright to cry and Atalantia being her own woman, I learned that I was indeed free to be me.

There is an old Yiddish proverb laments "If I do not be myself, who will do it for me?".

Even the Bard himself, William Shakespeare wrote "This above all, to thineownself be true and it follows therefore as surely as the night the day thou canst not be untrue to any man"

It is only when we live up to our own potential that we can achieve a deep lasting happiness.

Remember we are all Free To Be… You and Me!

The Cab Ride
by Unknown

I arrived at the address and honked the horn.
After waiting a few minutes I walked to the door and knocked...

“Just a minute”, answered a frail, elderly voice.

I could hear something being dragged across the floor.
After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her 90's stood before me.

She was wearing a print dress and a pillbox hat with a veil pinned on it, like somebody out of a 1940's movie.

By her side was a small nylon suitcase.
The apartment looked as if no one had lived in it for years.

All the furniture was covered with sheets.
There were no clocks on the walls, no knickknacks or utensils on the counters.

In the corner was a cardboard box filled with photos and glassware.

“Would you carry my bag out to the car?” she said.

I took the suitcase to the cab, and then returned to assist the woman.

She took my arm and we walked slowly toward the curb.

She kept thanking me for my kindness. “It's nothing”, I told her... “I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother to be treated.”

'Oh, you're such a good boy, she said. When we got in the cab, she gave me an address and then asked, 'Could you drive through downtown?'

“It's not the shortest way.” I answered quickly...

“Oh, I don't mind, I'm in no hurry. I'm on my way to a hospice.” She said.

I looked in the rear-view mirror. Her eyes were glistening.

“I don't have any family left,”
she continued in a soft voice…“The doctor says I don't have very long.”

I quietly reached over and shut off the meter.

“What route would you like me to take?” I asked.

For the next two hours, we drove through the city.

She showed me the building where she had once worked as an elevator operator.

We drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived when they were newlyweds

She had me pull up in front of a furniture warehouse that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl.

Sometimes she'd ask me to slow in front of a particular building or corner and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.

As the first hint of sun was creasing the horizon, she suddenly said, “I'm tired. Let's go now”.

We drove in silence to the address she had given me. It was a low building, like a small convalescent home, with a driveway that passed under a portico.

Two orderlies came out to the cab as soon as we pulled up. They were solicitous and intent, watching her every move.

They must have been expecting her.

I opened the trunk and took the small suitcase to the door. The woman was already seated in a wheelchair.

“How much do I owe you?” She asked, reaching into her purse.

“Nothing,” I said

“You have to make a living,” she answered.

“There are other passengers,” I responded.

Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held onto me tightly.

“You gave an old woman a little moment of joy,” she said. “Thank you.”

I squeezed her hand, and then walked into the dim morning light...

Behind me, a door shut. It was the sound of the closing of a life...

I didn't pick up any more passengers that shift. I drove aimlessly lost in thought.

For the rest of that day, I could hardly talk.

What if that woman had gotten an angry driver, or one who was impatient to end his shift?

What if I had refused to take the run, or had honked once, then driven away?

On a quick review, I don't think that I have done anything more important in my life.

We're conditioned to think that our lives revolve around great moments.

But great moments often catch us unaware-beautifully wrapped in what others may consider a small one.

It's the little things that mean the most.

PEOPLE MAY NOT REMEMBER EXACTLY WHAT YOU DID, OR WHAT YOU SAID ~BUT~THEY WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER HOW YOU MADE THEM FEEL.
